Summer Reading Program

Fuqua School believes that reading is vital to the learning process, that young people grow intellectually by reading good books, and that reading must be promoted throughout the curriculum.  The Summer Reading Program is designed to support these beliefs and to provide a means through which students are intellectually engaged on a year-round basis.

Required Reading

During the summer, each rising student in grades 4 through 12 must read one book designated for his/her grade level (see links below).*  Books can be purchased through local bookstores, major bookstores, and online vendors. Some copies are also available in the Fuqua School Library/Media Center.

* More than one book will be required for AP classes.  Students should see instructors for additional assignments.

Evaluation

Students will be given an opportunity to explore pertinent issues related to their summer reading assignment during group discussions.  An evaluation is also given to ensure that each student has completed this requirement.  The score the student receives on the evaluation is averaged with his/her other grades in English or History, depending on the subject area to which the book is related (see list).  A suggested guide for taking notes may be found on the webpage under "Academics/Summer Reading Program" (see link below).

In addition to the required reading, it is our hope that students will read all summer long.  A list of additional suggested books can also be found on the website.
