The College Visit and Interview

One of the most important aspects of the college search process is the visit. It is while on a campus that you will get a true feel for the college and how well you would fit in. By meeting with students, faculty and administration, and touring the dorms, classrooms and dining halls, you will be able to decide if that is where you want to spend four years of your life.

The Visit

  • You should visit every college that you are considering.

  • Take the campus tour and attend information sessions.
  • If possible, attend a class and eat in the dining hall.
  • Talk with students. They will be honest and knowledgeable about all aspects of campus life.
  • Meeting with a professor in your possible major is helpful.
  • Read the campus newspaper and check the campus bulletin boards to learn about important issues on campus.
  • If you plan to participate in a sport, attend a game. Meet the coach and team members.
  • Look at the town/city as well as the campus. Would you be comfortable in this community?
  • Consider all the social, cultural and recreational opportunities in the area.
  • Do you feel comfortable and challenged enough to make this your new home?

The Interview

  • Be on time. If you have a problem, call.
  • Dress appropriately. This is the only time to make a good first impression.
  • Shake the interviewer's hand firmly and maintain eye contact.
  • Be prepared. Be familiar with the published college information and carry a list of questions that you have. It makes you look prepared.
  • Know your SAT/ACT scores, GPA, grades in classes taken. What are your favorite classes? Strengths? Weaknesses?
  • Answer questions to the best of your ability. Don't pretend to know something that you don't.
  • Be yourself. Don't pretend to be something that you are not.
  • Don't worry if you do not see the Director of Admissions. All interviewers are well-trained and prepared to represent the institution.
  • Relax. This should be fun as well as informative.
  • Get the name of your interviewer and write a thank you note within two days.
