Welcome to the heartland of Virginia and Fuqua School. Located on a spacious 60-acre campus, Fuqua is an independent, coeducational, non-sectarian day school for grades prekindergarden through 12. Fuqua School strives to create a safe and supportive learning environment which fosters the development of students’ boundless individual potential.
The college preparatory program provided by Fuqua School includes many Advanced Placement and Honors level classes. A facility with technology and how it can be used to support learning is woven into the program at all grade levels. The school also offers unique and innovative courses such as aviation, Advanced Industrial Technology, and an 8th grade computer class featuring coding. Coupled with a broad range of extra-curricular and co-curricular options including numerous sports, band, Model UN, Envirothon, Model General Assembly, and many other activities, Fuqua provides many opportunities for personal growth. We strive to educate the whole child in an atmosphere that fosters high academic standards, problem-solving, creative thinking, and collaboration with an emphasis on always giving your best effort.
Fuqua School embraces the values of honesty, commitment, respect, cooperation, and perseverance that are so prized in our rural community. Students live each day in an environment of trust and follow an honor code. When current families, faculty, and alumni are surveyed about the most valuable aspect of a Fuqua School education, the most frequent response is the family-like feeling on campus with supportive teachers and an atmosphere rich with trust and mutual respect.
A key pillar of the school’s belief statement is that diversity strengthens a school community and should be embraced. Consequently, the expansion of our international student exchange programs at Fuqua has increased our diversity and offers all of our students an inclusive experience and a more comprehensive view of the world.
Originally founded in 1959 as Prince Edward Academy, the name and mission statement were changed in 1993 when the late J.B. Fuqua endowed the school. Governed by the Rural Education Foundation, Fuqua School is a member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools. Fuqua School serves students in more than ten counties spanning rural southside Virginia, with approximately 56% of those students receiving some form of financial aid.
Our location in central Virginia served as the stage for landmark events in the history of our country from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to the civil rights movement. Both Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College infuse our community with all the benefits associated with institutions of higher education, and Fuqua School is privileged to draw on all these local resources.
