Student Cooperative Organization (SCA)

The Student Cooperative Association (SCA) is an organization of students working in collaboration with the administration and faculty to promote the general welfare of Fuqua School. The organization exists in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, and officers are elected annually at each level. Every student in the school is a member of the SCA.

The Upper School SCA plays a leadership role in school-wide activities and in the development of student-related policies. It is a citizenship- oriented organization which strives to:

  • create mutual respect between the students and the school community
  • encourage cooperation and sharing of responsibilities among students, teachers, and parents
  • promote good sportsmanship in every phase of school and community activity
  • develop students who are worthy citizens of the home, community, nation, and world in which they live
  • examine the organization regularly with an open mind and a clear vision toward improving its effectiveness

The Upper School SCA conducts school assemblies, honors a Class of the Year, and coordinates elections held by school organizations and classes in grades 9-12. An SCA council meets periodically. This council is composed of the six Upper School SCA officers, student representatives from grades 9-12, committee chairmen, class presidents, the Middle School SCA president, and a faculty sponsor. Representatives from the Lower School SCA are welcome at council meetings.

The SCA Council coordinates election of upper school SCA officers. Any student who meets the eligibility requirements may run for office. Campaign speeches are delivered to upper school students who then vote by secret ballot.

The Middle School SCA Council is composed of five officers, who are seventh or eighth grade students, and representatives from each sixth, seventh, and eighth grade class. The council meets regularly to discuss issues of Middle School concern and to decide on ways to enrich the school through active participation and service.

Any student who wishes to run for a Middle School SCA office is listed on the first ballot. General voting is held by middle school students until there are three candidates for each office. These candidates deliver campaign speeches to the
middle school student body. Voting by secret ballot follows.

At the Lower School level, SCA officers must be in the fourth or fifth grade and are elected by the students in those grades. A representative from each fourth and fifth grade homeroom is also elected and serves with the four SCA officers on the Lower School SCA Council. The SCA Council meets regularly and functions as a service organization which introduces students to leadership roles and responsibilities.
