Summer Reading Program
Fuqua School believes that reading is vital to the learning process, that
young people grow intellectually by reading good books, and that reading
must be promoted throughout the curriculum. The Summer Reading Program is
designed to support these beliefs and to provide a means through which
students are intellectually engaged on a year-round basis.
Required Reading
During the summer, each rising student in grades 4 through 12 must read the
two required books designated for his/her grade level.* Books can be purchased
through local bookstores, major bookstores, and online vendors. Some copies
are also available in the Fuqua School library media center.
* More than two books may be required for AP students.
Evaluation
Required summer reading receives immediate attention at the beginning of the
academic year, with formal evaluations taking place during the first two
weeks of school. The specific evaluation procedures are given to students
after the first day of classes.
The evaluation of each required book counts as the first test grade of the
first nine-weeks in English/language arts except for upper school students taking
English second semester. For these students, the evaluation will count as the first
test grade of the third nine-weeks. Group discussions may be included as part of the
evaluation process.
Students are encouraged to complete a reading guide for each required book.
The guides may be used during the evaluation process. Fuqua School's
"Summer Reading Guide" is recommended for this purpose, but students may
create their own guides.
