Financial Aid and Scholarships

FINANCIAL AID

The concept of financial aid is really not very complicated. You and your parents simply complete a free application online called the FAFSA (between January 1 and March 1). Your information is then put into a formula and your Family Contribution is determined. This is the amount that the government (and your college) believe that you can afford to pay for that year's tuition. The remainder of your tuition (need) will be supported through grants (no payback required), loans, and work/study opportunities. You must be sure that a copy of this information is sent to your college.

Getting assistance in funding for college has become a necessity for many students, and the process is not that difficult if you plan early and get organized. You and your parents should ask employers to have all tax forms (W2s) completed as soon as possible. You will need these forms to complete the FAFSA.  You and your parents should also apply in December for a FAFSA pin number at the FAFSA site.

For additional information, visit one of the sites below or call or visit your college Financial Aid Office. A personal contact is especially important, if you have unusual circumstances or are unhappy with your determined need.

PROFILE: Some schools also require the PROFILE form for financial aid.

IMPORTANT: THE ONLY WAY TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID IS TO APPLY.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Unlike Financial Aid, most scholarships are based on performance in either an academic or athletic area. There are many local organizations that offer money for dedicated students, so check with your parents' employers, community organizations, churches, and your insurance company. Be sure to complete applications on time. If you are hoping for a Division I or II athletic scholarship, make sure that you have mailed the NCAA Clearinghouse form. Always check with the colleges to which you are applying because they are the best sources of scholarship information.
