Redefining Beauty

Fuqua Upper School celebrated "Redefining Beautiful." Ladies going without makeup sent the message that intellectual and emotional beauty is more important than physical. The real definition of beauty is so much more than just looks. It is your best friend’s basketball skills, your sister’s hard work on her English paper, the lines on your mom’s face from years of smiles and laughter, and your smile when you look in the mirror. Celebrate healthy and redefine beautiful.

"Music in the Parks" Competition

Recently Fuqua School was represented by ninety students and more than sixty family members at the "Music in the Parks" competition held in Williamsburg, Virginia. Schools from Pennsylvania to Georgia participated, and both Fuqua School bands came home with first place trophies.
The Fifth and Sixth Grade Band won in the Elementary School Concert Band 1A school division, with a rating of "excellent," the second highest rating that can be given. The Junior Band won the Junior High School Concert Band 1A school division with a "superior" rating, the highest that can be given.
Fuqua School believes the arts are fundamental to a child’s development and provides the opportunity for participation from the lower school years to graduation. From the first day of pre-kindergarten, the sounds of learning include singing, creative movement, rhythm instruments, and finger plays, making learning fun and providing a means for the development of fine and gross motor skills. Lower school students participate in weekly music and art classes. In middle school, students continue to explore music and art education, with the addition of theater in the upper school.
Forum of Understanding: Opening Eyes, Expanding Minds
|
Fuqua School recently held its Forum of Understanding: Opening Eyes, Expanding Minds. Past forum topics have been civil liberties, diversity, people with disabilities, honor, living a healthy life, and the environment. This year’s two day event focused on forensics, the application of science to solve a crime or civil case. Speakers included representatives from the Farmville Police Department, Prince Edward County Commonwealth Attorney, Longwood University Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Emergency Response Team, Buckingham Correctional Center, and the California Department of Justice.
|

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Emergency Response Team talked with students about career opportunities in criminal justice.
|
The keynote speaker was Mrs. Annette “Kiwi” Kiewiet de Jonge, Criminalist Supervisor for the California Department of Justice in San Francisco, CA. Mrs. Kiewiet de Jonge graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a concentration in Microbiology. Currently, she is a Criminalist Supervisor who oversees both the IT functions of the laboratory and the genetic analyzer section in the Data Bank. Mrs. Kiewiet de Jonge spoke on DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and forensic science.
|

|
Mrs. Kiewiet de Jonge shared, “A forensic scientist is not what you see on CSI; not a criminologist, but a criminalist; someone who answers who, what, where, and sometimes when (but not why); someone who identifies and collects evidence for preservation and testing; and someone who performs scientific analyses and communicates those results to a judge and jury.”

Farmville Police Department’s Detective Sgt. W. H. “Bill” Hogan addressed the students on solving crimes and set up the “crime” the students would have to solve. The upper school students were divided into teams.
Detectives from the Farmville Police Department held four investigation workshops, which described the steps to be followed when solving a crime. Detective C. W. Moss presented fingerprinting, while Detective Sgt. Hogan focused on DNA. Detective Dexter Franklin demonstrated how impression evidence, such as a shoe print, could be used, and Detective B. H. Paulette and Investigator Sam Gilliam held a session on interviewing suspects. The students visited the Prince Edward Courthouse where James R. Ennis, Commonwealth Attorney, described what happens in the courtroom. All students and presenters convened back at school to solve the “crime,” which was based on an actual "breaking and entering" crime committed in Farmville several years ago. It was an informative forum filled with questions and answers as well as suggestions for careers in criminal justice.

Art Students Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Recently Fuqua School art students visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibit, Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb. The students walked around this 7000-square-foot exhibition of more than 100 ancient artifacts that were brought to life by a 3-D film which explored the life, mummification and afterlife of Nesperennub, an Egyptian temple priest who lived 3,000 years ago.
Advances in technology have made it possible to look inside a mummy without disturbing the wrappings. The 3-D film allowed the students to travel through the body beneath the wrappings. Students also learned about the discoveries that have been made due to the scientific study of mummies including the reasons for and process of mummification, life expectancy as well as health and disease in ancient Egypt.
Ms. Denise Penick, art teacher, shared, “Having the opportunity to share the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts with our students is priceless. This particular exhibit is quite special as it combines art, science and technology.”

Recently Zach and Brandon spent the day in Richmond “shadowing” Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates William J. Howell. This gave them first-hand knowledge to prepare for their jobs at MGA in April. Lieutenant Governor Zach Davis will serve as the presiding officer of the Commonwealth Senate. He will control debate in the Senate and maintain order and decorum. It is the second highest position in Virginia's government. Speaker Brandon Ah will serve as the presiding officer of the Commonwealth House of Delegates. He will control debate in the House and also maintain order and decorum. In addition, the House Speaker will preside over all joint assemblies of MGA legislators.
|
|
The Model General Assembly (MGA) program is designed to introduce high school students to the legislative process of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Selected students represent their schools as executive officers, senators, delegates, legislative officers, pages, reporters and lobbyists while debating legislation in committees and on the floors of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia. While introducing future leaders to Virginia's system of government, this program also conveys the importance of citizen participation and public service. Last year more than 600 students participated representing 60 public and independent schools.

Special Veterans' Day Program

Pictured are Zach Davis, Middle/Upper School Dean Susan Carden, Lauren Lowe, COL Jeffrey Hice,
Zach Williams, Tatum Davis, and Clyde Crone.
On November 11, 2011, Fuqua School and the community gathered together to honor local Veterans. The program began with Fuqua's sixth grade band playing America the Beautiful. Zach Williams, son of Ms. Crystal Huff of Clarksville, then led the group in prayer. Tatum Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Davis of Farmville, welcomed everyone and shared the history and significance of Veteran's Day. Fuqua School's two Eagle Scouts, Zach Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Davis of Rice, and Clyde Crone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Crone of Cumberland, presented the colors. Middle/Upper School Dean Susan Carden led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the junior and senior bands played the Star Spangled Banner. Zach Davis gave the history of each of the Armed Forces songs, and as the junior and senior bands performed them, the veterans stood as their particular song was played.
The highlight of the program began when Lauren Lowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wood of Buckingham, introduced the guest speaker, Col. Jeffrey Hice, a twenty-five year U.S. Army Veteran. Col. Hice began his military service as an enlisted man in 1986 and earned a commission as an officer in 1990. He has served in varied assignments as a combat arms officer and in the field of counter-terrorism and disaster response. His military service has taken him to most of the contiguous United States as well as to many foreign countries, including Germany, Tajikistan, Israel, and most recently, Afghanistan. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Houghton College, a Masters Degree from Saint Bonaventure University and a second Masters Degree from the U.S. Army War College. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Virginia Legion of Merit, the Combat Action Badge and the Ranger Tab. His last assignment was a one-year combat tour as a Military Advisor to the Afghan Army.
Col. Hice offered thoughtful insight on "What to Say to a Veteran," and then honored Fuqua School with a special American flag and certificate from Headquarters, International Security Assistance Force, resting in a display case crafted in Kabul. Students and adults were obviously touched by this gift which will be proudly displayed in the Gee Price Office.
The program ended with Carl Benhoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Benhoff of Prospect, playing Taps. Veterans were again recognized and sincerely thanked by the audience.

Another group weeded the horseshoe pits and parking lot borders; while others washed windows and collected trash at the water treatment facilities and surrounding area. Several passersby complimented the students for their community service.

A New Tradition is Born

Fuqua School's sixth grade class with their teachers, Mrs. Valerie Thomas and Mrs. Mary Herdegen.
Traditions are a constant at Fuqua School. One of the pivotal moments in a student's life at Fuqua is "moving up the hill"
to the middle school. This year, the PTSA suggested a new tradition for each sixth grade class: plant a tree to commemorate the occasion. Lorrie Watson and Harlan Horton, PTSA Building and Grounds Co-Chairs, assisted with the planting of the River Birch tree in front of the upper school gym. Ruth S. Murphy, President of Fuqua School, talked with the sixth graders about this new tradition and the importance of taking care of their tree and the environment. She closed by sharing that when they graduate as the Class of 2018, they will walk right by their tree toward the ceremony.

See You at the Pole

Fuqua School students, faculty and staff joined together around the flagpole on Wednesday, September 28, to pray forstudents, school administration, family, community, government officials, the nation, and the world in honor of “See You AtThe Pole (SYATP) 2011.” This year’s theme, CONVERGE, was based on Matthew 18:20 - Whenever two or three of you come together in my name, I am there with you.
Members of the Middle and Upper School Youth For Christ (YFC) led the program, with YFC President Charlotte Cave,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Cave of Farmville, giving the welcome. The history of SYATP was shared by Davis Cyrus, YFC Vice President and son of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Cyrus of Farmville. SYATP is a student-initiated and student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas in 1990. Around 2 million teenagers from all 50 states plus Canada and Australia are expected to gather at their schools to ask God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and countries. Scripture was then read by Tatum Davis, YFC Secretary and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Davis of Farmville. Antonio Gonzales, YFC Treasurer and grandson of Mrs. Laura Fowlkes of Meherrin, led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer from Jacob Miller, YFC Chaplain and son of Mr. David Miller of Farmville. After the program, the more than 250 attendees received a SYATP wrist band. Mrs. Frances Moore is the sponsor of the Youth for Christ.
