Fuqua Battle of the Brains

On October 7, Fuqua School competed against Matoaca High School on the popular local televised show, Battle of the Brains.  The academic quiz show is sponsored in part and televised by local CBS affiliate WTVR Channel 6 in Richmond, Virginia.

The Fuqua School Battle of the Brains Team is composed of four members and one alternate.  Ms. Brenda Meshejian, math instructor and Ms. Stephanie Trovato, science instructor, served as the coaches for the well-rounded, talented team of academic athletes.

Since the beginning of the school year, the two coaches have held after-school trivia competitions against volunteer student teams culminating in a faculty-challenge assembly to mimic the show’s fast-paced and high-pressure atmosphere.  The five-student Fuqua Battle of the Brains team competed against eight of Fuqua’s expert faculty members, proving the team was well prepared and ready for a fight.

Fuqua School is not new to competing in Battle of the Brains. The school has not appeared on the show for several years, but played a great game against the more experienced Matoacan team.  In order to appear on the show, Fuqua first had to compete against high schools throughout central and southeast Virginia and North Carolina to secure one of the top thirty-six spots in a timed written team test that covered all academic subject areas, as well as pop culture and sports trivia.  Fuqua placed high in the qualifying round and moved to the on-air competition round.  The Fuqua Battle of the Brains team is currently on break after the intense competition, but will resume practices this winter to prepare for more trivia challenges.  The show will be aired Saturday, November 17 at 10 A.M. on CBS Channel 6 WTVR.   Pictured are members of the Fuqua School Battle of the Brains Team with their coaches.
