How to Select a College
What Should You Consider
Longwood College
Selecting your college is a very important decision that you want to make with great care. You need to be organized so that you can best use all of the information that is available. In sorting through the material, you need to keep in mind these essential things:
- KNOW YOURSELF. Know your likes and dislikes, classes you enjoy in high school, possible majors and career goals, strengths and weaknesses.
- LOCATION. How far are you willing to go from your home? Out of state? Do you want to be in an urban or rural area?
- SIZE. How large a school would you consider? Number of students/ physical area of campus?
- TYPE OF SCHOOL. Coed/All male/All female, Religious affiliation, Public/private?
- SELECTIVITY. Does the school match your academic abilities? Do you want to go to a school where you fall in with the top half of the class academically or a more selective school where the competition will be fierce?
- DORMS. Coed/single sex, type of rooms, size, air-conditioned, availability to all students?
- FOOD. Types of meal plans available, location of dining facilities ?
- FACILITIES. Recreational and academic, on and off campus opportunities?
- ACTIVITIES. Social life, clubs, athletics, Greek life?
- COST. While obviously a very important factor, you should not eliminate consideration of a college because of the sticker price. Financial aid and scholarships often make expensive private colleges the least expensive option.
After you have made some of these decisions, do your own search using one of the search/information sites listed below:
