Fifth Graders Learn About Ecosystems

Mrs. Pembelton’s 5th grade class has been learning about ecosystems in science. Following a recent lesson, the class stepped outside the classroom walls and went exploring the various ecosystems around the school. Students looked, discussed and analyzed each ecosystem they came across. Then, they identified and labeled both living and non-living things found within their ecosystems.

College Reps Visit Campus

The first month of school is in the books, and our juniors and seniors are planning with an eye toward the future. College admission representatives from Shenandoah, JMU, Hampden-Sydney College, and Roanoke have recently visited the Upper School to provide information sessions to students. College Counselor and US Head Jennings Custis has arranged for additional admissions departments to visit such as UVA and Christopher Newport, among others. Some will also send current students who are Fuqua alumni to engage in more informal sharing about their college experiences. Later in the year, several nearby colleges will also provide on-site admission interviews for our graduating seniors. You can see the notices about the college visits included in the Upper School daily announcements.

Lower School/Middle School Buddies

Each year, 8th grade students are partnered with K/1 students for our LS/MS Buddy Program. This program helps encourage our middle school students to build their leadership skills, and to also serve as a guide and mentor to our younger Falcons. For this first introductory activity, students played board names with their buddy groups. The buddies meet once a month and already love spending time together.

Cameron Gallagher Foundation Presents Program

On Tuesday, August 27, students in grades 6-12 listened to Grace Gallagher from the Cameron Gallagher Foundation present on teenage stress, anxiety, and mental health. Students listened as Grace told the story of her teenage daughter, Cameron, and her struggles with anxiety and depression and the ways in which Cameron worked to manage her struggles. On Friday, August 30, students in each grade level engaged in break-out sessions where they identified stressors in their lives and positive coping strategies they can use when they feel anxious and stressed. Emily Erickson, a senior at Fuqua, stated "I learned some coping strategies for managing stress. I think the mission of the foundation is remarkable, and so needed." More information about the Cameron Gallagher foundation and their mission can be found by visiting

Pledging Our Commitment to Our Core Values

The Upper School SCA Officers hosted an Honor Assembly for students in grades 4-8. During this assembly, they discussed the importance of Fuqua School's honor code and explained how following the honor code aligns with our Fuqua School Core Values. Following the assembly, the LS and MS students signed Fuqua School's Honor Code pledging to commit to these values. This Honor Code will hang in the LS/MS Commons as a reminder of their commitment and honor.
