Pre-K Students Visit Richlands Dairy

Both PK classes had a fantastic time on their field trip to Richlands Dairy Farm, and were able to learn more about cows and pumpkins. Students learned about milking cows, how farmers store the milk, how farmers keep track of the cows using “cow Fitbits”, and how they monitor what the cows eat. Students were also able to learn about the pumpkin life cycle, and were able to select a pumpkin of their own to take home. The students were also able to enjoy a hayride, the petting barn, a picnic lunch, and the farm playground.

FS Falcons Collect for Hurricane Relief

Article written by: Avary Collins, 8th grade

From September 30-October 4th, the Fuqua School Falcons collected supplies for hurricane relief efforts.

Fuqua School received monetary donations, through a dress down day, to aid the victims of Hurricane Dorian. Fuqua Lower and Middle Schools gathered $879 dollars and Fuqua Upper School gathered $319 dollars, adding up to a total of $1,198 dollars. The Falcons also assembled household items including personal care items, pet supplies, food, baby supplies, and cleaning supplies.

Austin Frazier, the Middle School SCA President, shared her thoughts on the subject: “I think it is our job to try to assist those in need to our best ability”.

The students at Fuqua School do these acts of kindness based on our core values: honesty, responsibility, kindness, compassion, respect, commitment, perseverance, cooperation, and fairness.

New Aviation Project

The Fuqua School Aviation class is currently refurbishing an old experimental plane. Working alongside our knowledgeable volunteers, they have received a good taste of the tedious work it takes to make something new again. Twice weekly, they meet in the aviation shop to disassemble and revitalize some part of the plane. Over the previous weeks they have been peeling off the old coverings of the wings, and sanding down the exposed metal to ensure the new coverings will adhere to the surface. On classroom days the students have been completing the online aviation 101 course and working on piecing together their remote-controlled planes.

3D Printing Part of MS Elective Wheel

This year, the 7th and 8th graders are able to participate in the Art Elective Wheel.  Each quarter, the students will be introduced to new classes designed to explore the arts in more depth.  This quarter, students in the 3D Printing class enjoyed using Tinker Cad and Makers Empire.

"This class was amazing.  It has been a really fun place to come every day.  We learned how to design and print.  We started on an app called Tinker Cad where we did most of our projects.  We also used Makers Empire for a little while.  One of my favorite projects was we got to make a truck.  Unfortunately, there was a small flaw and I lost some progress, but I recovered from it.  I hope to use 3D printing on future projects." - Bradley French

"I learned how to make an original design in Tinker Cad.  My favorite design was to make a car.  That was challenging and fun.  I would like to take my skills to another level to do bigger and better things.  I also liked using the Makers Empire program for 3D Design.  Makers Empire and Tinker Cad are for beginners.  I think I was very lucky to be able to do a class like this and learn to make 3D designs." - Isaac Satterfield

Student Leaders Attend Farmville Youth Summit

On Thursday October 10th, eighteen Fuqua School students joined students from Cumberland County and Prince Edward County High Schools at Hampden-Sydney College to participate in the Farmville Youth Summit sponsored by the Farmville Chamber of Commerce. The theme of the day was developing the entrepreneurial mindset and ecosystem. In the morning sessions the students were divided into three groups and attended presentations on business planning, financing a business, and then marketing a business. Afterwards, the students teamed up to develop business models. Some of the ideas from our students included starting a taxicab business in Farmville, opening a Five Guys Restaurant, creating biodegradable fishing nets, and launching a motorized scooter rental business. After lunch, the students heard from a panel of business and community leaders.
