Jump Rope for Heart a Huge Success

Congratulations to all of our lower school students who participated in Jump Rope for Heart this past February. They worked so hard this year to exceed all of our previous goals. They raised over $9500.00 in honor of Asher Pleasants, brother of lower school students Mary Reagan and Piper. Our top fundraiser for this year's event was Everrett Farrar. A huge thank you to all the students for supporting JR4H in honor of Asher!

Signing Day for the Class of 2020

May 1 was National College Decision Day. Seniors across the nation declared their commitment to a college or university. Our own Fuqua School seniors dressed in their school of choice attire as they signed letters of commitment for Fall 2020 in front of family at home.

Our 31 graduates were collectively offered over $3.2 million in scholarships to various colleges and universities; they will use $1.5 million in academic scholarships or an
average of $48,387 in financial assistance for each senior.

We wish them the very best on this next step in their education. We’re so very proud of you.

MGA Took On New Look

The Model General Assembly program was established in 1948 and is designed to introduce high school students to the legislative process of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Legislation is debated in committees and on the floors of the actual Virginia Senate and House of Delegates.  However, not this year. Due to COVID19, this year's Model General Assembly was quite different than in the past.

Rather than cancel the event all together, YMCA officials moved forward using technology. Delegates and Senators presented and debated bills, campaigned for offices, and voted through Zoom sessions while in their own homes. Senior Roman Davis and Speaker of the House Pro Temp stated, " . . . of course it wasn't quite the same, but we had fun debating, and we prepared everyone for next year."

Congratulations to Fuqua School’s Roman Davis ‘20 and Sophie Watson ‘21 who were both selected to attend the Conference on National Affairs through the Model General Assembly program. Sophie was also elected as the Lieutenant Governor for MGA 2021.

DARE Program Completed

Fifth grade students have worked all spring to complete the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Taught by Officer Tim Holtz (father of Timothy Holtz, class of 2023) and Amy Rostan, LS/MS School Counselor, the DARE program educates students on topics including substance abuse and bullying. Our 5th graders also learned strategies for general problem-solving, sound decision making, and equipped them with strong citizenship skills . To successfully complete the program, students had to actively participate in all class sessions, interview an adult about a time they needed assistance, and write a final essay about the program. Our final DARE class was held via Zoom on April 21 and the students will be honored at a graduation ceremony in fall 2020.

Specials Teachers Join in the Distance Learning

Fuqua School specials and elective teachers have created a section on the main lower and middle school class pages for students and parents to explore. This "we provide, you decide" model gives families a bank of active and hands-on educational activities that are accessible to them to participate in whenever they choose. These are not required but rather fun extra ideas that families can do together during this time.

These teachers will continue to add activities to these pages weekly, so families will always have fresh, new ideas! Please visit the lower school's main class page and the middle school's main class page to experience the fun!

Teaching From A Distance

While our campus is closed for the school year, our school is not closed. Fuqua School teachers are continuing to teach and learn with the help of online platforms such as Zoom, YouTube, and Edmodo where they are still able to deliver their instruction to students. While families across the world are home and practicing social distancing, our teachers are exploring new and fun ways to keep our students learning content while bringing the classroom to them.
